downpour days

commuting in nyc today was utter misery...cold and windy with that lovely sideways rain. everywhere I looked I saw flimsy umbrellas flailing in the wind while others, long forgotten, lay busted on the ground.

but not mine. mine was like the rock of gibraltar. it didn't turn inside out, buckle or even flutter. and yes, of course, it was vintage. it's yet another addition to the long list of things that was just better made back then.

so for the girl who values quality and wants to look cute even in a rainstorm, either of the above will serve you well.

flea fashion

although our sense of style may be drastically different, I have nothing but admiration for this woman. I imagine getting this jazzed up for a flea-market at the crack of dawn is no easy feat.

subject: Awwww....love, love LOVE!!!

So I'm sitting at work, do, do dodoo-ing my way through the day, and a huge box arrives for me from a Swanee Grace - who is this Swanee Grace I say to myself? I crack it open and inside is the most beautifully wrapped (in brown and white polka dot fabric no less!!!!!!), divine, trendy and awesome SNOWFLAKE HANDBAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I so so love it and it is perfect for New York - I am going to take it with me to dinner tonight. And on top of it wrapped in cute string with little paper flowers is the most gorgeous card...

While it's true I love the merchandise and the hunt, it's emails like the above that make me love what I do even more. They also help to further justify getting up at 5am to go to an estate sale when all I really want to do is roll over and sleep for another 3 hours.

(p.s. nicole, the purchaser, runs a wonderful etsy shop where she sells screenprinted tea towels you will be proud to hang in your kitchen)

sheer nylon blouses

I have a bit of a soft spot for sheer nylon blouses. over the years I have amassed quite the collection, but in the next few weeks I will be letting go of more than a few, all from my personal collection. I've already sold one to the lovely katie who runs the fab vintage etsy shop archivia and I just listed another this afternoon.

the one I'm wearing above may eventually make it into the shop but sentimental silliness keeps stopping me from selling it. it's been in my collection since July 16th, 1998. I remember the exact date because, on the same day I bought it, I wore it to a luna concert at castle clinton in battery park and ended up in a photo for time out magazine.

(12 years later I'm still way into vintage but thankfully my hairstyle has changed.)

double take

those who know me will recognize these boots well. while thrifting over the weekend in nyc I was surprised to find the exact same boots I found (and wear all the time) last fall up in massachusetts. I have honestly worn mine way too much, even with things I probably shouldn't have worn them with. but you must know how that is...when you like something so much you kinda wear it just a lil' more than you should.

the weird thing is both pairs were never worn. I mean, who would've bought these and not wear them, like, the next day.

(boots on the left are mine, the ones on the right are in the shop now)

a first-class flea

it may only be tuesday, but right about now I'm all about the upcoming weekend. unlike many, I had no extra time off during the holidays, but in 3 days I will officially be on vacation. of course, there's no better way to kick it off than with a flea. but a flea inside a restored historic bank???

the interior of the williamsburg savings bank looks breathtakingly beautiful and the idea of it brimming with vintage & handmade...well, needless to say, I'm over the moon. thanks, eric!

shop crush: mother's daughter

why, oh dear why, must I be allergic to wool??? I am seriously coveting everything in this ever-so-fab fledgling shop!

and if it wasn't for my aforementioned allergy, all, and I mean
of the above would have been snatched up by moi -- #1, #4, #6, and this fox-trimmed coat, are already en route. I actually had a daydream of wrapping myself in saran wrap so I just might be able to wear #2 and #5! if only once, for a few hours at least...I mean, those colors and those cuts. too perfect.

hayden, the sweet shopkeeper, stocks the shop with all sorts of vintage clothing gems and little etceteras of fashion: the type that make the heart go pitter-patter. you can check it all out here.
get ready to swoon.

happy new year!

were you out dancing last night in your vintage best?

when I first laid eyes on this, via hollister hovey, I was totally transfixed and couldn't stop watching. don't you agree? you can read all about phenakistoscope gif animation here.

so looking forward to another year -- umm, wait, another decade -- full of vintage goodness.
